 Pizzoli is located in the Aterno’s valley on the south side of the mount Marine (1465 m),
north-west of the town of L’Aquila, close to the old city of Amiternum. It’s about 15 Km
far from the regional chief town, at 738 m. a.s.l. and is part of "Amitermina " Mountain
Community, zone A.
 The municipality of Pizzoli extends for some 56 square Km and its territory is located
for about 50% inside the National Park "Gran Sasso - Monti della Laga". 3000 people live
there: population is increasing and building development is continuous.

    The Castle ‘Dragonetti de Torres’ is a square
    plan building with angular sentry boxes.
     Pierre Larbitre renovated it in 17th century 
    and incorporated a Middle Ages tower.


 Between Pizzoli and Preturo and S.Vittorino
(42° 23' N,13° 19' E, 682 m. a.s.l.) is located
one of three Italian geomagnetic observatories
of the National  Institute of Geo-physics and
Volcanos Sciences.    I.N.G.V. 
 The nature of the ground and the four 
not-magnetic buildings permit absolute 
measures of magnetic declination F,
inclination and intensity. It’s possible also to
measure and register automatically components
H-D-Z, F-H-D and so on. The observatory has
moreover a proton-precession magnetometer, a
nuclear-precession magnetometer and a
ring-core magnetometer, realized by N.I.G.

The Observatory of Campo Imperatore is located on the Gran Sasso Mountain at about 2200 meters above the mean sea level.

The Gran Sasso Laboratories are located beside the Gran Sasso Tunnel (10.4 km long) on the highway connecting Teramo to Rome, at about 6 km from the west entrance, at 963 m over the sea level and the maximum thickness of the rock overburden is 1400 m,

                    From a report of the Italian Forest Rangers 06/08/01:
                    
 At 4,30 PM the pine forest over Pizzoli begins to catch fire. The fire destroys some 170 hectares
of the pine forest between the ‘Fosso del Buco’ and the ‘Fosso di S. Stefano’.

 A beautiful pine forest, that was the north view of the town, is now a bad panorama: 
the wind brings stink and ash, the rain brings debris down in the town’s roads and we live
with the nightmare of possible landslides.
 Tough the Firemen and the Forest Rangers used also some airplanes in order to put off the
fire, hydro-geological, economic damages have been serious and we will need lot of money 
and time to restore everything.
  It happened in Pizzoli unexpectedly.
